On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the L.C. de Villiers sport was officially opened.

The sport stadium was named after Professor of Geology, Louis Celliers de Villiers. De Villiers was appointed in 1910 and became a professor in 1920. He was a sport enthusiast and passionate about rugby. In 1913 he became an honorary president of the Tuks rugby club. The new sport stadia would include 7 rugby fields, a cricket field as well as a soccer and hockey field. Later a netball field, sport field and pavilion was also added.

The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. The volumes of the University’s history captured in Ad Destinatium i-v, as featured here, also forms part of our collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
