A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 03 May 1955

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the Mineral Science Building was opened by dr F. Meyer the chairman of the council.

This building was originally known as the Third Mathematics and Sciences Building. It was designed by architects A L Meiring and P R Nel to form part of the inner court of the university and reflects elements of the Modern Brazilian style. It has a light green and white terrazzo cover and diamond-shaped windows adorning the two entrances. In the 1980s various departments were relocated resulting in the natural convergence of all the earth sciences departments into the same building, after which the name was changed to the Mineral Sciences building.

The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. The volumes of the University’s history captured in Ad Destinatium i-v as well as information on its building history, as featured here, also forms part of our collection.
