Prof Lisa Marriott strengthens ties with UP’s Department of Taxation

Posted on June 24, 2025

Prof Lisa Marriott's visit to the University of Pretoria's Department of Taxation from 1 to 11 June 2025 proved to be both academically enriching and memorable. Prof Marriott is an extraordinary professor in the Department from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. During her stay, Prof Marriott provided invaluable guidance to her current and former PhD students, offering expert supervision and mentorship that advanced their research endeavours. She also generously shared her expertise with the Department’s staff, advising them on various research projects.

The visit wasn't all work, however, as Prof Marriott enthusiastically participated in the Department's recreational activities, joining colleagues for a scenic walk through the beautiful Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve and engaging in the mid-year break activities where everyone crafted stress balls together.

Her departure became unexpectedly dramatic when customs officials in New Zealand detained her for carrying what appeared to be suspicious balloon-like objects, which were actually the innocent flour-filled stress balls from the workshop, though she was eventually cleared and allowed to proceed.

The timing of her visit also coincided perfectly with the renowned Comrades Marathon, which she watched with great interest from start to finish, experiencing first-hand one of South Africa's most celebrated sporting traditions while contributing significantly to the academic life of the Department of Taxation. Ngā mihi nui! (Thank you for all the kindness and support, Lisa.)
