On 2 June 2025, a team from the
Department of Taxation, alongside PhD candidate Makofe Lepheana, visited the University of Venda to offer second-year BCom Accounting students a unique learning experience.
With the support of Prof Hanneke du Preez, Dr Mpumi Monageng, and research assistant Carmie du Preez, Makofe facilitated a virtual reality tour of a stainless steel factory – part of his PhD research. An incredible 84 out of 87 students participated, fully immersing themselves in the simulated factory environment.

The students’ energy, curiosity, and thoughtful engagement were inspiring. Both students and staff expressed how impactful the session was, and are already looking forward to returning.
It’s experiences like these that show the power of technology in transforming tax education and connecting theory with the real world.
