Nausea and vomiting

Definition

  • condition of the gastro-intestinal system where the client feels like vomiting; sign that someone has an illness

Causes:

  • food poisoning
  • oral contraceptives
  • drug side effects (TB drugs, ARV drugs, metronidazole, anaesthesia)
  • pregnancy
  • severe period pains
  • certain medical conditions, like:
  • migraines
  • appendicitis
  • cholera
  • gastritis
  • heartburn
  • gastroenteritis
  • oesophageal reflux
  • allergic reaction
  • high blood glucose

 

Management

  • fluid replacement therapy (oral sips or drip)
  • anti-emetics, medicine for nausea

 

Test your understanding:

3) Do you have to stop treatment when you experience side effects?

 Answers:

  1. migraines, oesophageal reflux, allergic reaction, high blood glucose

 

  1. Yes, especially if taken in the morning before eating.
