Travel and accommodation

Foreign Currency

  • South African Rand is the only legal currency accepted in South Africa.
  • Note that you cannot exchange certain currencies (e.g. Tanzanian Shillings or Malawi Kwacha) anywhere in South Africa. You therefore have to bring South African Rand, Euros or US Dollars for all expenditures you are to incur whilst in South Africa. If you do not have SA Rand, you will have to exchange your Euros or US Dollars for SA Rand.
  • You can conveniently do this in the arrival halls at the OR Tambo International Airport before travelling to Pretoria. Note that you can generally not exchange foreign currency at any hotel or guest house in South Africa. You can only do it legally at a Bureau de Change (e.g. Rennies Travel) or at certain branches of commercial banks.

Visa Requirements

You must enquire well in advance of your planned visit whether you need to obtain a visa to visit South Africa.

Please visit the following websites if you want to enquire:

1.Documents and processes: http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/applying-for-sa-visa

2.Countries exempt from visas: http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/immigration-services/exempt-countries

If you are only visiting South Africa for periods of one to three weeks at a time, you need not apply for or expend the costs pertaining to a student visa and compulsory South African health insurance. Short-course attendees or part-time MPhil (masters) and PhD (doctoral) students can enter South Africa on a visitor’s visa appropriately endorsed (namely “to attend short courses or block-week sessions at the University of Pretoria”).
