Quality Control of Medicinal Plants

We won a R320 000 contract from the European Union Centre for the Development of Enterprise [CDE] to produce a set of African medicinal plant  standards [AMPS] for 21 Pan-African Herbal Medicines exported to Europe.  We coordinated this project with subcontracts to colleagues in the rest of Africa. We also obtained funding of c. R160 000 from CTA-EU to organize an international workshop in South Africa to evaluate the products of the AMPS project.  Based on this workshop, the AAMPS Association for African Medicinal Plant Standards was established with the aim to eventually produce an African Pharmacopoeia.  Funding was obtained from CDE for the second phase of this project to develop another 29 profiles during 2008 at a cost of c. R536 000.  To ensure the long term survival of AAMPS the EU Pro€invest provided funding of c R800 000 for a project run jointly with CRIAA based in Namibia.  More information is available at www.aamps.org .
