Research in the Department of Physiotherapy

Welcome to the research and postgraduate page of the Physiotherapy Department. We endeavour to grow and develop research in the Department in order to develop scholarly researchers who will contribute to better health care and rehabilitation in the country. Physiotherapy research identifies with the University’s vision of being a leading research-intensive university in Africa, recognised internationally for its quality, relevance and impact, and also for developing people, creating knowledge and making a difference locally and globally.

Our research is informed by the burden of disease, health care and rehabilitation needs of the South African population. The research therefore covers a wide range of areas from paediatrics, sports, women’s health, geriatrics and community health, to mention but a few. Physiotherapy research is supported by a range of state of the art equipment and state of the art movement analysis equipment. Excellence is an important attribute and value underpinning our research. As a result, three researchers in the Department have been awarded the Merit award for Research in the School of Health Care Sciences. Numerous grants have also been awarded to researchers in the Department for individual as well as multidisciplinary research purposes
