The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) South Africa National Chapter Activation Meeting on “Women Leading Science Forward” took place on the 9th of April at Protea Hotel (Fire & Ice), Menlyn, Pretoria. This event was attended by an esteemed calibre of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Innovation (STEAMI) from various South African higher education institutions and industry, aiming to empower, elevate and connect women in STEAMI.

The panel discussion highlighted the need for breaking barriers, leading science forward and building the future in STEAMI. These impactful topics were addressed by exceptional panellists, including our very own Prof Vanessa Steenkamp (Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning, Faculty of Health Sciences), who shared her journey and how she “broke barriers” to reach her current position. The panellists expressed the importance of mentorship in fostering scientific advancement. Furthermore, three speakers shared their experiences of leveraging their scientific expertise to develop products that are commercially available; including obstacles they encountered and tips for others who plan to undertake similar paths.

This event had outstanding participation from UP colleagues, including Dr Yvette Hlophe and Ms Tebogo Lebelo from the Department of Physiology, as well as PhD graduate Dr Nare Sekoba (Physiology). The event concluded with a networking session that facilitated thought-provoking discussions between early-career and established researchers and professionals.
