Teaching with the brain in mind

Posted on March 22, 2023

Dr van Rooy recently presented a lecture: "Teaching with the brain in mind" as a FLY@NAS event. Her talk focused on the ability of the brain to use sensory information to make sense of our surroundings and for survival.

Because our brains are therefore constantly bombarded by information from our external and internal environments we as lecturers need to adapt our lecturers to accommodate the brains of our students to ensure that effective learning can take place. By focusing on the physiology of learning she discussed practical ideas to assist our students to focus on important information and not get bogged down by irrelevant input. The way we as lecturers plan and conduct our lectures can either help or hinder learning when incorporating how the brain works.
