Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist

Prof Nicolette du Plessis is a registered Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist and currently serves as the Head of the Division of Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Pretoria and Kalafong Hospital.

She completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Stellenbosch and subsequently qualified as a paediatrician through the University of Pretoria. She holds a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics, a Fellowship from the College of Paediatricians of South Africa, and a Diploma in Allergology. She obtained her Certificate in Paediatric Infectious Diseases following a two-year fellowship, during which she also completed a Diploma in HIV Management and a Certificate in Travel Medicine.

Her PhD focused on infants living with HIV, reflecting her strong research interests in early HIV diagnosis and treatment. Her broader academic and clinical work in Paediatric Infectious Diseases includes catch-up vaccination, COVID-19, tuberculosis, vaccine-preventable diseases, inborn errors of immunity, disease surveillance, and antimicrobial stewardship.

Prof du Plessis currently serves as the President of the Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa (FIDSSA) and has held numerous positions on both local and international executive committees.
