Department of Paediatrics excels

Posted on January 05, 2012

This year (2011), at the University of Pretoria, Paediatrics was regarded as the 4th best department overall in the School of Medicine regarding publication outputs. That is quite an achievement when the small size of this Department is taken into account, the large clinical workload that it is faced with and the fact that it was judged against mostly pre-clinical departments.

Our postgraduate candidates had an 88% pass rate for their examinations (higher than the previous year’s 75%) and several candidates had outstanding achievements.

At the prize giving ceremony seven candidates were honoured for the best mark in each examination:

·         FC Paed Part II: Ané Buchner was honoured as our best candidate at this year’s (2011) examination and also the best College (CMSA) candidate overall. The second best candidate was also an UP student.

·         FC Paed Part I: Mitch Choopa

·         Anatomy: Dipoe Kutumela

·         Physiology: Mel Coetzee

·         Pathology: Adele Pentz

·         Diplomas: Salomé Abbott – she also won the Eugene Weinberg Medal for the best candidate in 2011

·         Certificate examinations (infectious diseases): Nicolette du Plessis
