A look at the activities of Paediatric Pulmonology at the University of Pretoria

Posted on February 27, 2012

The Division is led by Professors Robin Green and Refiloe Masekela. In the last few years we have trained at least half of South Africa's burgeoning Allergy Diplomates and facilitated many MMed projects that have led to degrees and publications.

Research is a priority of our Division and in the last two years we have had 14 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Our research has focused on the major diseases of children’s chests that we see, namely HIV-related lung disease as well as asthma.

We feel privileged to manage this wide spectrum of patients and offer care to all South African children who struggle with lung pathology. Our Children’s Chest and Allergy Clinics are a popular place for the patients of Northern Gauteng and its surrounding areas. We have a reputation for excellence in care that has made us a referral centre for many patients across the country and into our neighbouring states. This clinic has state of the art diagnostic procedures and has recently employed a Lung Function Technologist (Odette).

Paediatric Pulmonology at UP has now trained seven Paediatric Pulmonology sub-specialists for South Africa and we have singlehandedly put the discipline of Paediatric Pulmonology on the map. Included in our graduates are the Professor of Pulmonology at Medunsa, Limpopo campus - Professor Sam Risenga.

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Steve Biko Hospital is run by us and this is the area we are most proud of. In 2006 we made the decision to admit children with very severe HIV-related pneumonia to ICU. At that time we were one of only two ICU's in the country to do so. Mortality was a problem from this condition in those early days but our progressive research into this problem has improved survival to the current 80 percent. Most children now survive this form of pneumonia which used to kill them before.

This research has led to a publication in the pre-eminent Paediatric Critical Care Journal, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Our Division has seen three fellows (Teshni Moodley, Marian Kwofie Mensah and Salome Abbott) awarded Traveling Fellowship Awards to present their research at International Congresses. Professor Green has been awarded Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Chest Physicians and Royal College of Physicians. Professor Masekela is the Chair of the National Asthma Education Programme, a member of the Medicines Control Council and even with her busy schedule she is about to complete her PhD.

So if you want a home in a thriving field of medicine, join our team. Research, teaching and publications abound in our Division.
