Achievement in Paediatric Pulmonology

Posted on December 07, 2012

At the Gala Dinner and Awards Function of the University of Pretoria held on the 17th November 2012 Dr Omolemo Kitchin was awarded Best Publication: Runner Up for his paper:

Kitchin OP, Wessels F, Masekela R, Becker P, Green RJ. Costs of admission for paediatric pneumonia in a setting of human immunodeficiency virus infection. International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease 2011;15:1702-1706.

Category: Best overall publication: Qualitative Research

A short summary of this work reveals the importance of the paper.

Acute pneumonia reflects a failure of HIV prevention policies and admission to hospital is a frequent event for children with pneumonia. Auditing the costs of admission of children with pneumonia has revealed that the case fatality rate for HIV-associated acute pneumonia is 14% in a general ward and 46% in a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The actual bed costs are R1388.23 for an HIV-infected child in a ward but R3060.00 in a PICU. That is three times higher than for an HIV-uninfected child. Controlling this process is critical to the health economy of a country facing a significant burden from HIV.

Congratulations Omolemo!
