A boon for premature babies is what they call it.
Pretoria News published an article on Kangeroo Mother Care (KMC) and the unit at Kalafong Hospital after their visit to the hospital. The journalist and photographer were invited to promote awareness of Kangaroo Mother Care. Patients shared their personal views on this.
Dr Elize van Rooyen introduced KMC to Kalafong Hospital, located to the west of Pretoria, during 1999. Since then the life expectancy for the very small has increased dramatically in this premature baby unit in the Department of Paediatrics. This method of care has been increasingly adopted worldwide because of its cost effective nature and suitability for developing as well as first world countries. Bonding is also a huge benefit for mother and child.
