Marianne spent three months in the Department during the latter part of 2011 as part of a programme aimed at fostering and establishing a congenial, scholarly relationship between these two institutions.
The purpose of Dr Carvalho’s visit was the active participation in Departmental activities as well as exposure to the wide array of HIV-related pathology to which we have become so accustomed. She had the unique opportunity of being involved in Kaposi sarcoma research.
In between a hectic schedule, Marianne took time out to savour the sights and sounds of our vibrant country for an overall once-in-a-lifetime, memorable experience. She visited Sun City, Soweto, the Apartheid museum, Blyde River Canyon, Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay. Her adventurous spirit saw her hiking in the Drakensberg as well as shark-cave diving in Port Elizabeth. One of her greatest desires was to Bungee jump from the highest commercially operated site in the world – a daunting, stomach-churning 216m drop from the Bloukrans River Bridge in the Eastern Cape. She was absolutely ecstatic about achieving this feat in the last week of her visit.
Marianne was an animated addition to the Department with a sparkling personality and keen sense of humour. Her time with us will be remembered fondly. The IAOP congress in São Paulo later this year will hopefully provide us with the opportunity to reunite and catch up again.
