Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology includes the study of disease involving the soft tissues, bone and dental hard tissues of the maxillofacial region. The aetiology, pathogenesis and clinical presentation of all reactive, infective and neoplastic processes involving the head and neck and specifically the oral cavity are studied. This module forms part of the undergraduate curriculum for a Bachelor degree in Dentistry (BChD) and a Bachelor degree in Oral Hygiene (BOH) degrees.

Modules

Dentistry

  • Maxillo-facial Pathology (MFP 470/570): A two-year examination course for BChD fourth and fifth years of study.

Oral Hygiene

  • Maxillo-facial Pathology (MFP 371): A one-year examination course in the third year of study.

Anatomical Pathology

Anatomical Pathology includes the study of the microscopic, macroscopic, biochemical and immunological disease processes of the organs and tissues. This module forms part of the undergraduate curriculum for a Bachelor degree in Dentistry (BChD).

Dentistry

  • Anatomical Pathology (ANP370): A one-year examination course in the third year of study.

Oral Biology

Oral Biology provides a thorough knowledge of the development, structure and functions of the oral cavity and associated structures. This includes the facial bones, tooth development and movements, dental hard tissues, temporomandibular joint and salivary glands. The clinical relevance and application of these structures provides the foundational knowledge for the clinical subjects. This module forms part of the undergraduate curriculum for a Bachelor degree in Dentistry (BChD) and a Bachelor degree in Oral Hygiene (BOH) degrees.

Modules

Dentistry

  • Oral Biology (MDB 280): A one-year examination course in the second year of study.

Oral Hygiene

  • Oral Biology (MDB 172): A one-year examination course in the first year of study.

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic Imaging provides an understanding of the physics and geometric principals of dental radiography as well providing the knowledge and skills to perform dental radiographic techniques, interpret these images, recognise normal anatomy and diagnose pathological conditions. This module forms part of the undergraduate curriculum for a Bachelor degree in Dentistry (BChD) and a Bachelor degree in Oral Hygiene (BOH) degrees.

Modules

Dentistry

  • Diagnostic imaging (RAD 380): A promotional course in the third year of study.
  • Diagnostic imaging (RAD 480): An examination course in the fourth year of study.
  • Diagnostic imaging (RAD 580): The module is presented as a prerequisite for the Maxillofacial and Oral Pathology examination in the fifth year of study.

Oral Hygiene

  • Radiography (RAD 272): A promotional course in the second year of study.
  • Radiography (RAD 372): An examination course in the third year of study.

Forensic Odontology

Forensic Odontology forms part of Maxillofacial and Oral Pathology undergraduate curriculum.

Modules

Dentistry

  • Forensic Odontology (MFP 570): lectures forming part of the Maxillofacial and Oral Pathology for final year dental students (BChD V)

Oral Hygiene

  • Forensic Odontology (MFP 371): lectures forming part of Maxillofacial and Oral pathology for the third year oral hygiene students (BOH III)
