NAS Women: True strength lies in one’s ability to get up and keep going
Women’s Month: Focus on Ms Gayle Wall

Q: Job title and in which department/research entity do you work?
A:
PhD Genetics Student in the Orbivirus Research Group in the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology

Q: What has been the highlight of your career?
A:
Sharing my research at national and international conferences has been the highlight. In so doing, I have been able to interact with experts in my field, allowing me to draw on their knowledge and passion for science.

Q: What inspires you?
A:
I work on the African horse sickness virus and am inspired by the knowledge that the research I do today may save the horses of tomorrow.

Q: What challenges have you experienced in your career?
A:
I have faced many challenges during my postgraduate career, both personal and professional. The most difficult challenges have arisen from the #FeesMustFall movement and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: What message do you have for the youth of South Africa?
A:
Pursue your dreams, and don’t worry if you stumble along the way. True strength lies in one’s ability to get up and keep going.
