Engineered Timber Training Week

Posted on February 14, 2025

UP Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology was thrilled to have hosted another successful Engineered Timber Training Week at @RAW Modular! From January 27th to February 7th, talented students from various South African universities experienced the world of engineered timber design and fabrication.
During the training, students gained hands-on experience in:
- Understanding engineered timber: Exploring its material properties, structural possibilities, and sustainability.
- Modular design thinking: Learning about prefabrication, flatpack design, and systems thinking for efficient and innovative design solutions.
- CNC Machining: Translating 3D models into reality using CNC cutting and fabrication techniques.
- Prototyping: Bringing their own engineered timber designs to life through model creation and testing.
We were blown away by the students' creativity, enthusiasm, and innovative designs! Thank you to our presenters, partners, and everyone involved in making this event successful.
The event was organised by the York Timbers, Chair in Wood Structural Engineering and the Chairperson, Prof Schalk Grobbelaar, is an Associate Professor within the Graduate School of Technology Management.
