Posted on May 05, 2011

Marie-Louise Barry obtained her BEng from the University of Stellenbosch in 1990 and her MEng(Project Management) (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria in 2003.

She has over 18 years’ experience in project management in the defence environment.

In her thesis, Contributions to the theory and practice of technology selection: The case of projects to ensure a sustainable energy base for Africa, the promovenda followed an inductive research approach in order to identify the most important factors to be taken into account in selecting renewable energy technologies in rural Africa. The methodology for the study involved a focus group, two rounds of a Delphi technique and eight case studies in Rwanda, Tanzania and Malawi.

The thesis summarises a framework of 13 factors, together with measures for each factor that can be used to select renewable energy technologies in Africa.
