Financial Management staff bring smiles to Louis Botha Children’s Home

Posted on August 29, 2019

Staff from the Department of Financial Management recently brought smiles to residents of the Louis Botha Children’s Home. As part of its community service activity this year, the Department reached out to the Home to find out what its needs are and encouraged staff members to contribute toward these.

The Louis Botha Children’s Home is a house of safety for children who were taken away from awful circumstances by the court. They accommodate about 80 children between the ages of 7 and 18 years living there permanently in nine separate homes. The Children’s Home is very dependent on donations and has a long list of permanent needs, such as medicine, non-perishable foods, clothes and cleaning materials.

Staff members were requested to add the items to their trolleys when they go grocery shopping and it was not long before the boardroom of the Department was stacked with necessities and  toys.

As a team building exercise, staff packed additional parcels with goodies for the children, which contained some toiletries, sweets, caps for the boys and hair pins for the girls. These donations were delivered to the Home on 26 July 2019, along with a burger, fries and a cold drink for each child, sponsored by the Wimpy at Queen’s Corner in Queenswood.

The fun afternoon spent with the children concluded with a sweet treat, as Jacomien Visagie from the Department sponsored a soft-serve ice cream truck with almost unlimited amounts of ice cream. “We will definitely do something like this again in future,” said staff in the Department.
