2012 Student Awards

The Separations Science research group scooped both student prizes at the recent ChromSAAMS 2012 conferenceheld at Dikhololo. Neil Malan (PhD student of Prof Egmont Rohwer) won the Best student poster award, sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and Leandri van der Wat (Honours student supervised by Dr Patricia Forbes) won the Best student oral presentation award which was sponsored by ChromSA.  The panel of four international judges were very impressed by the high standard of all the students contributions.  As you can see from the photos, it was big smiles all round for the group!

SAAWK STUDENT SYMPOSIUM, NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY, POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS.
The SAAWK student symposium in Afrikaans for 2012 was attended by approximately 90 scientists from all over the country. Six representatives of UP's Chemistry  Department attended this event. Congratulations to our PhD student, Jurgens de Lange (supervised by Prof Cukrowski) who won first prize for his presentation entitled "Stabiele CH-CH-verbindings in metaalbipiridielkom-plekse: ’n Teoretiese ondersoek Chemie - UP".

1-2 November 2012

Genna-Leigh Geldenhuys, a masters student of Dr Patricia Forbes, won the prize for the Best Poster at the National Association for Clean Air Conference in Rustenburg.  Her poster was entitled "Analysis of diesel particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in confined environments”. Congratulations Genna!
