Introduction
This workshop is crucial for online distance learning as it covers both technological and pedagogical knowledge. Participants will gain hands-on experience with learning management systems (LMSs), video conferencing tools and other interactive tools, enhancing their technological proficiency. They will also explore effective pedagogical strategies, such as blended learning models and active learning techniques. Practical activities and tool demonstrations will reinforce this session.

Description

The workshop covers two themes: technologies for distance learning, and designing pedagogies in distance teacher education.

The first theme - Technologies for distance learning will provide an overview of the evolution and current state of distance learning technologies, including LMSs, video conferencing tools and interactive platforms. Participants will engage in practical demonstrations and activities, such as hands-on sessions with LMSs and interactive quizzes.

The second theme - Designing pedagogies in distance teacher education will delve into core pedagogical theories and their relevance to distance education. It will explore blended learning models, active learning strategies and assessment methods, with practical applications and tool demonstrations. This workshop will include group presentations and conclude with a Q&A session to address participants' questions and provide further insights.

Prof Cedric Bheki Mpungose (University of South Africa, South Africa)

Cedric Bheki Mpungose is a full professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies (CIS) at the University of South Africa (Unisa) in Pretoria. His extensive research focuses on the integration of educational technology and curriculum in higher education. Prof Mpungose has delivered presentations at numerous conferences, and his work has been published in various accredited journals. He has also mentored and graduated numerous MEd and PhD students, and has been the recipient of the Fulbright Research Scholar Award (2019–2020) and Mellon Fellowship Award (2021–2023). He currently holds the prestigious NRF Thuthuka Research Fund Award (2023–2025).
