Prof Johan Wassermann
Full Professor in History Education

Professor Johan Wassermann is a Full Professor in History Education at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He is also the Head of the Department of Humanities Education in the Faculty of Education and the Acting Deputy Dean for Teaching and Learning. Prior to his academic career, he taught History and Geography at the high school level. Additionally, Professor Wassermann serves as the editor-in-chief of Yesterday & Today, an accredited journal focused on History Education. He serves on numerous editorial boards and is the president of the Historical Association of South Africa and co-chair of AHE-Afrika. His primary professional objective is to prepare History teachers to critically engage with the subject matter within diverse South African classroom settings. In his research, he focuses on History textbooks, teaching controversial issues, minorities, and the minoritized in colonial Natal. He has a strong publication record in both national and international journals in the fields of Education and History and is a C1-rated researcher in the South African context.

Prof Elijah Omwenga, PhD, is a distinguished academic in computer science with over 30 years’ experience as a software engineer and ICT consultant. He has published more than 60 scholarly articles and has held notable positions, including his current role as Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya. He has also served in leadership positions at the University of Kabianga and the University of Nairobi, and is involved in various governance boards, including his current role at the Kenya Industrial Property Institute. Recognised as a Commonwealth and VLIR scholar, he is dedicated to enhancing higher education accessibility and quality in Africa
