Participation in Training Seminar for Mozambique Government

Posted on February 25, 2016

Leon Gerber, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Law and Programme Coordinator of the newly established LLM in Extractive Industry Law in Africa, was recently invited by the African Legal Support Facility (under the auspices of the African Development Bank), to present a training seminar to senior government delegates of the Republic of Mozambique.

The week-long training, hosted from 25 to 29 January 2016 in Maputo, was aimed at enhancing the ability of senior government officials to negotiate complex mining transactions on behalf of Mozambique.  One of the leading causes underlying legal disputes in relation to natural resource exploitation, is poorly negotiated and drafted contracts and concessions. Regularly coupled with an imbalance in the negotiating capacity between government and industry representatives, the sustainable development of natural resources can be severely hampered.

Therefore the seminar was designed to contribute to the Government’s proficiency in natural resources and extractive industries management and contracting, and to safeguard fair and favourable terms from the mining agreements it enters into.
