The African Mining Legislation Atlas Project is an initiative by the World Bank's Legal Vice-Presidency. It is being implemented in collaboration with the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) and the African Union Commission (AUC) to help African countries maximise mineral resource benefits.
Accordingly, the project objectives include promoting transparency, accessibility, and comparison of Africa’s mining laws; facilitating the preparation, revision, and implementation of mining laws; providing a living database to catalyse research and policy debates on legal and regulatory issues; and promoting the development of local legal expertise on African mining laws.
The University of Pretoria (UP) Law has been an integral part of the AMLA for several years, contributing to its mission of enhancing accessibility, transparency, and knowledge of mining laws across the continent. Through its involvement, UP Law has played a significant role in research, capacity building, and the development of legal resources that support sustainable and responsible mining practices in Africa.
