Centre for Emerging Arbo and Respiratory virus Research

Welcome to the Centre for Emerging and Reemerging Arbo and Respiratory Viruses (CEARV).

Established in 2023, the CEARV research group has been involved in multiple research studies aiming to predict, detect and prevent emerging and reemerging and endemic respiratory and arboviruses of local and global public health importance through the use of cross-disciplinary collaborative research.

Our vision is to establish a centre that focuses on emerging, reemerging and endemic respiratory and arboviruses with the potential to affect local and global health security through mitigation of the effects of climate change, vector and reservoir host expansion on human health.

Professor Marietjie Venter serves as the director of CEARV at the University of Pretoria (UP) through her appointment as extraordinary professor at the Department of Medical Virology. CEARV functions through virtual collaboration between the Faculty of Health, Veterinary science and Natural Sciences linked through the Cluster of excellence for Climate change (ARUA/The Guild) and also works in close collaboration with the Emerging Viral Threats, One Health Surveilance, and Vaccines (EViTOH) division, also led by Professor Venter, through her recent appointment as distinguished professor and NRF-SARChI chair at the University of Witwatersrand (WITS), within the Infectious Diseases and Oncology Research Institute (IDORI).

For any additional information with regards to collaborations with the CEARV and EViTOH centres or prospective students who are looking for more information, you are encouraged to contact Professor Marietjie Venter or Ms. Caitlin MacIntyre in the CEARV staff bracket under about us.
