Please join us for a two-day symposium in honour of Professor Riël Franzsen upon his retirement from the ATI. The symposium will take place on 29 and 30 April 2024 between 08:00-16:00. Prof Franzsen served as director of ATI from 2007 to 2023. Currently, Prof Franzsen occupies the South African Research Chair in Tax Policy and Governance. He has served as a policy advisor for various international entities (including the IMF and World Bank) in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East. He specialises in land and property taxation. He has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.

The ATI, the University of Pretoria and the tax community would like to honour him for more than three decades of dedication and immense contribution to the field of tax policy. The symposium is arranged as a hybrid session, combining in-person and on-line paper presentations, which will culminate in a liber amicorum (book of friends). Unfortunately, due to limited capacity, all the in-person seats are fully book. However, if you would like to attend online, please email us at ati.up.ac.za to receive further communication on the session.

9th African Tax Symposium

The African Tax Institute at the University of Pretoria is proud of its association and collaboration with the IBFD Africa Tax Symposium. The 2024 Symposium will take place from 29-31 May in Nairobi Kenya. This is one of the great signature tax events we have on the continent to network and exchange ideas on tax matters from an African perspective.
