At just 24 years old, Dimakatso Koketso Lekola, known as DK, is already a force in education, youth empowerment and community activism in South Africa. An LLB graduate of the University of Pretoria (UP), DK was recently named a Sunday World Unsung Hero in the ‘Communities Service’ category – a recognition that honours his profound impact on learners, youth and underserved communities across the country.
As the founder of the DK Lekola Global Education Institute (GEI), Lekola has made it his mission to equip the next generation of South Africans with the tools, mindset and opportunities to thrive – especially in high-demand industries like STEM, healthcare, engineering and technology.
“We’re not just tutoring learners,” Lekola says. “We’re building future leaders, innovators and economic frontliners who will shape the South Africa of tomorrow.”
A vision beyond the classroom
Established in 2022, the DK Lekola Global Education Institute was born from Lekola’s desire to bridge the glaring gaps in South Africa’s education system. The institute now supports more than 1 500 learners annually, offering a suite of services that go far beyond academics.
With a strong emphasis on holistic development, GEI addresses the full spectrum of learner needs – including academic support, career guidance, mental health, mentorship, legal awareness and access to platforms that nurture creativity and innovation. Special care is given to supporting learners with special needs and disabilities, ensuring an inclusive and empowering learning environment for all.
The power of purpose-driven leadership
A multi-award-winning social entrepreneur, Lekola blends his legal training, governance experience and community focus to lead effectively and ethically. Beyond his institute, he serves as President of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Tshwane, where he works with other young leaders on civic engagement, leadership development and entrepreneurship.
His legal background in governance, risk and compliance has also shaped the structure and sustainability of the institute – ensuring that every programme offered is impactful, accountable and designed for long-term change.
A journey inspired by kindness
Lekola’s community work is deeply personal. It was inspired by the generosity and mentorship of Ms Seshita Shalang, his Grade 11 teacher, who believed in his potential and supported him through his academic journey.
“She invested in me when she had no obligation to. That one act of belief is the seed that grew into this movement. This award is for her, and for all the teachers and mentors who quietly shape destinies.”

Advice to young changemakers
When asked what advice he would give to aspiring community builders, Lekola is quick to offer grounded wisdom: “Start small. Start now. You don’t need funding to care. Begin with the resources around you – a skill, a group of learners, a shared idea. One hour of tutoring, one workshop, one connection can spark a chain reaction of change. Stay consistent, be teachable, and always let service lead.”
DK Lekola’s story is one of vision, resilience, and heart – a reminder that transformation doesn’t require perfect conditions, only the courage to begin.
