University of Pretoria (UP) alumna and Chief Executive Officer of Dimatrade, which makes Dillets sanitary towels, Dimakatso Kanyane has earned a place on the 2024 Mail & Guardian’s (M&G) 200 Young South Africans list in the Health & Wellness category.
This recognition has been nothing short of exhilarating, says the young business owner who graduated with a degree in Business Management from UP’s Gordon Institute of Business Science.
“It has fuelled my believe in myself and in my business even more, and has motivated me to expand our offering beyond South African borders,” Kanyane (31) says.
Dimatrade conducts its sales through various retail outlets, and 10% of its monthly revenue is donated to help young girls who face challenging socio-economic circumstances. As CEO, Kanyane’s primary responsibility is to establish and communicate the company’s vision and strategy. Fulfilling the purpose of Dillets – which is to eradicate period poverty one sale at a time – is what she likes most about the job.
Having grown up in Siyabuswa, a small rural area in Mpumalanga, Kanyane experienced the taboos surrounding menstruation. This, she says, may have been a mix of cultural and generational influences; ultimately, young girls were taught not to talk about their periods.
“The concept of Dillets emerged from having been one of the last of my peers to reach this very important passage to womanhood, which came with its own challenges,” she recalls. “I was often teased for not yet having had my first period. When I finally did, at 16, I was riddled with insecurities, and lacked the confidence to ask the questions that were coursing through me.”
She had no one to turn to and promised herself that she would find the best product for her needs.
“It was this search that eventually led me to the development of Dillets sanitary towels,” she says.
Kanyane applauds UP for providing her with a strong foundation and inspiring her to strive for excellence.
“This recognition is not just mine – it is also a reflection of the incredible education and opportunities I received at this esteemed institution.”
