UP Future Africa sets up a Chair for Global Equity in Africa

Posted on October 23, 2023

Future Africa www.futureafrica.science is the University of Pretoria’s unique pan-African collaborative research platform that works across scientific fields and disciplines, and with society, to address Africa’s biggest and most urgent contemporary challenges. The machinery of this transdisciplinary research platform is led by Research Chairs which implement comprehensive programmes of work within its challenge domains. These include Sustainable African Food Systems, Sustainability Transformations in Africa, African Science and Technology Futures, One Health and Global Equity in Africa.

Established in March 2023, the Future Africa Chair in Global Equity in Africa www.futureafrica.science/our-challenge-domains/global-equity-in-africa aims to promote global prosperity and peace by positioning Africa as a contributor, not just a beneficiary. Africa’s performance in the dimensions of peace and prosperity continues to lag behind as it remains the most impoverished continent with high levels of sustained conflict and serious breaches emanating from climate shocks, migration and human trafficking. This reality automatically hinders the attainment of global equity given the incapacity of the one continent to contribute to the achievement of the global goals.

Against that contextual background, the Research Chair will pursue multi-perspective strategies that may facilitate a balance of Africa’s performance with that of other actors in the global arena within the peace and prosperity interfaces. The envisaged strategies are geared to identify challenges preventing progress on the continent and to pinpoint innovative pathways for overcoming them. In the interim, the Chair has identified three research focal areas which are Solidarity, Governance and Freedom from violence.

The domain is chaired by Prof Dire Tladi, for further information and inquiries do not hesitate to contact Dr Irene Nyakagere Thomas by email [email protected] or office telephone 012 420 6186.
