Impi Visser is the latest TuksRugby Alumni to become a Blitzbok captain. Visser graduated from UP as a mechanical engineer in 2018 and was part of the Tuks team that won the 2017 Varsity Cup. Visser says that playing Varsity Cup has been one of his favourite memories and to be able to win it back in 2017 was something truly special. He adds that wearing the Tuks jersey is a massive privilege and many successful rugby players in the professional arena have come from the Tuks jersey. Visser captained the team to yet another victory in the Seville 7s which took place in Spain at the end of January. He mentioned that the team wanted to keep to their structures and take the tournament one game at a time, and this paid off for the team.
According to News24, With the Springbok Sevens squad back in training after the Christmas break, Blitzbok forward Impi Visser expects the green and gold to continue their fine start to the 2022 World Series in Spain and is eyeing the highly anticipated Commonwealth Games.
Despite winning back-to-back Dubai tournaments and leaping into the overall standing lead, Visser believes that the Blitzboks still have a lot to give if the squad wants to achieve all of the goals they have set for themselves
"I don't think we lost momentum due to the festivities, everyone knew that it remained important to stay in shape over the short break and we are all determined to make the best of the year to come”, he told News24
"I personally would love nothing more than to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town later in the year, obviously, I would also love to play in as many tournaments in the World Series as possible, although there might be some rotation in the squad during the season," he added.
Visser wants to remind the 2022 FNB UP- Tuks team that no one is greater than the team. “Always put your teammates above your own ambitions, and then you will see what playing together as a team means. Go make memories that will last forever; don’t forget to enjoy it along the way and remember there is always time for a nice cold beer as a team after the Monday night games.”
