ELECTION/APPOINTMENT OF COUNCIL MEMBERS BY THE CONVOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA

The voting phase in the election/appointment of Council members by the Convocation of the University of Pretoria commenced on 7 June 2017 and closed on 20 June 2017. A total of 1 242 Convocation members cast their votes, either electronically or manually.

The results of the voting on the appointability of the nominated candidates who were short-listed by the Short-listing Committee in terms of the Institutional Rules were verified by the Registrar and KPMG on 21 June 2017 and communicated on the Alumni webpage.

In accordance with the Institutional Rules the outcome of the voting process and the full CVs of the candidates were tabled at a meeting of the Standing Committee of Council held on 23 June 2017 where a recommendation on the appointment of Convocation members on Council was made to Council.

At its meeting of 28 June 2017, Council considered the provisions of the Institutional Rules, the full CVs of the candidates, the outcome of the election and the recommendation by the Standing Committee of Council.

In terms of paragraphs 3.6.17 and 3.6.18 of the Institutional Rules the two candidates who obtained the most votes in respect of appointability from the Convocation (in two different positions) will be automatically appointed to Council and Council therefore confirmed the appointment of Mr AJ (Appie) Pienaar in position 1 (qualified auditor) and Mr DM (Danie) Behr in position 4 (IT expert) to serve on Council, having obtained the most votes in the election.

Council members voted by means of secret ballot on the candidates in the two remaining positions, namely position 2 (finance and investment) and position 3 (general well-being of the University), with due consideration of the requirements in respect of race and gender as well as the requisite expertise and experience as provided for in the Institutional Rules. Council, by means of majority vote, appointed Mr AD (Anton) Botha and Ms KP (Kedibone) Diale to serve on Council in positions 2 and 3 respectively.
