UP builds links with Ghana

From 25 to 29 July 2016, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria (UP), Prof Cheryl de la Rey attended the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) conference of university leaders in Accra, Ghana, where she was one of the plenary speakers. Prof De la Rey is also the current Vice-Chair of the ACU Council.

During her visit to Ghana – accompanied by Advisor to the Vice Chancellor and Principal, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, and Alumni Relations Officer, Ms Vuyo Ntloko – Prof De la Rey also delivered a lecture at the University of Ghana on the importance of research collaboration among African universities.

She also hosted a dinner for UP alumni where the long-term aim to initiate a West African chapter of TuksAlumni was announced. A total of 43 guests attended the dinner, including the SA High Commission Head in Ghana, Her Excellency Lulama Xingwana. Prof De la Rey outlined the University's plans for collaboration in Africa. In the interim period, alumnus Dr Pardikor Madjitey, who obtained her PhD in education at UP, volunteered to be the acting alumni co-ordinator for the West Africa chapter.

Dr Madjitey shared her positive experiences and fond memories of the University with the attendees. Her Excellency Ms Lulama Xingwana also addressed the gathering.

Prof Maluleke visited Ashesi University, a private university situated about 40 kilometres outside Accra in order to explore opportunities for future collaboration.
