A collaborative approach is a key principle in achieving the research outcomes of the SEMLI, and as such the Institute promotes inclusivity and cross-pollination of research ideas and activities. Integration of research activities is realized through the development of internal (within UP) and external (national and international) research collaborations with academics, organisations and industry. The aim is to not only grow the existing complement of researchers, but to attract new researchers and doctoral and post-doctoral students into the field and to the University.

Collaborations within the University of Pretoria:
It is recognized that at the University of Pretoria there are a number of clinicians, researchers and research groups that are already active in the fields of sport and exercise medicine, exercise and sports science, nutrition, physiotherapy, biokinetics, psychology, genetics and molecular medicine, physiology, orthopaedics, engineering, law, education, ethics, economics, management and others. This presents a unique opportunity to utilize the strengths of its existing infrastructure and staff to develop a strong research and teaching program. The SEMLI acts in support of these existing researchers and research groups within Faculties, Units, Centres, Institutes and Bureaus by fostering research collaboration in the areas of sport, exercise medicine and lifestyle research.

Collaborations with Local & International Academic Institutions:
The SEMLI recognizes the importance of knowledge sharing between research institutions and as such continues to expand its research platform both locally and internationally. Professor Schwellnus has been awarded the Directorship of one of only nine International Olympic Committee (IOC) Research Centres - this Centre is located at SEMLI. This provides an opportunity for UP to engage in collaborations with the research platforms of the other IOC Research Centres in the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, Qatar, Japan, South Korea and Australia.
