Art Beyond Walls Sculpture Route

Art Beyond Walls is a unique sculpture route in higher education and explores the University of Pretoria's outdoor sculpture heritage located within the beautifully landscaped gardens. The museums curate a very diverse sculptural collection on public display across all campuses that garners immense art interest and appreciation. In response, the museums launched a sculpture route for all to explore, engage with, and experience. These more than 29 sculptural works are by distinguished South African artists such as Saki Seoka, Guy du Toit, Abraham Makhabula, Angus Van Zyl Taylor, Zoltan Borbereki, Edoardo Villa, Brian Sandrock, Willem de Sanderes Hendrikz, Berco Wilsenach and Anton Smit, among many others. The meander along the sculpture route provides two options: a shorter route that is about thirty minutes long and wheelchair friendly, and a longer, extended route that takes about an hour and a half. This route aims to share sculpture as an in situ art form among the UP community, staff and students, and humanise campus spaces as creative and part of the beautiful natural heritage. The works also aim to stimulate thoughts, debate, and engagement with museum collections beyond the traditional walls of lecture halls, and the museums encourage all academic departments to use campus art as part of their teaching curricula. Many works are situated in close proximity to the University of Pretoria Museums, set in the beautiful gardens, and can be found among the historical buildings and down Tukkie Lane, stitched to South Campus.
