Art Archives of the University of Pretoria

The University of Pretoria Archives is also the custodian of the University of Pretoria’s Art Archives, an extensive collection of records related to South African art and artists. The origin of the Art Archives can be traced back to the 1930s when a concentrated effort began in the Department of Art History at the University to collect information regarding South African artists. The collection expanded systematically over the following 70 years and today constitutes a unique window on South African art in the twentieth century. The collection comprises files of documents, clippings, publications and photographs related to among others, graphic artists, sculptors, monuments and museums, galleries, art collections, auction houses and various art societies.
