It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing away of Herman (HEC) Tesner on 20 December 2017. He was our beloved Speech Science lecturer from 1967 until his retirement in 2009 from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. He obtained his MA degree in 1969 with the title, The basic principles of programmed teaching, applied and adapted to suit a programmed course in speech sound discrimination. The dissertation was written in Afrikaans and prepared under the supervision of Prof. P de V Pienaar, who established the Department in 1959.
We fondly remember his distinctive sense of humor, his vast knowledge, sharp insight and exceptional language ability. He was a gem in our departement and a very supportive colleague. He was the longest serving member of staff in the department and taught, among other modules, the course in speech sound discrimination exceptionally well.
