About the Department of Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering at UP was established in 1959, has produced more than 1300 graduates in Chemical Engineering and puts a strong focus on research. It has a staff complement of 17 Academic and 6 support staff as well as a number of additional research and support personnel appointed on a contract basis. The total student number is about 770, of which about 520 are undergraduates and about 70 are full-time M- and PhD students.

Our undergraduate programme ensures a sound foundation of the principles of chemical engineering, is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), who is a co-signatory of the Washington Accord. This means that our graduates can continue with postgraduate studies overseas or practice internationally with recognised credentials.

At postgraduate level we focus our research on Applied Materials, including Polymers, Carbon- and Fluorine compounds, Water and Environmental Engineering, Bio-reaction Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering and Process Modelling, Control and Optimisation.
