SDH and HiAP

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a unique agreement across nations of the world on common domestic and global goals and priority actions to achieve these goals. The goals and actions cover policy areas in the economy, environment, and society, and together create an inter-sectoral vision for improvements in human and planetary health, peace, partnership, and prosperity. As such, goal 3, on the health of people, “ensuring health lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages”, is a goal that can only be achieved if actions for many different goals are realized. The SDGs list many key actions on determinants of health, also highlighting reductions of within-country inequalities in health determinants as a key priority.

Similarly, stakeholders concerned with addressing the determinants of the social gradient in health (social determinants of health (SDH) and health inequities) call on governments to embrace an inter-sectoral vision of health. Given the large range of health determinants covered by the SDGs and its emphasis on greater social inequity, SDH, the community is aligning its tools and efforts more generally to address health determinants and health justice with the SDGs agenda where possible. This includes supporting the actions described in the SDGs for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and other health services, as well as the actions in other goals that focus on improving important conditions for good population health and health equity. Health in All Policies (HiAP) is an approach to public policies across sectors that systematically takes into account the health implications of decisions, seeks synergies, and avoids harmful health impacts, in order to improve population health and health equity.

Project brief for the project: To conduct social science research for who afro on risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) during covid-19

Aim: to explore policies, programs, and actions to strengthen and incorporate social determinants of health (SDH) for the management of covid-19 in the African region.

HiAP

Background: The determinants of health and health inequalities in populations have a social, environmental, and economic origin that extended beyond the direct influence of the health sector and health policies.

Aim: To develop the HIAP manual for trainees from the WHO Afro region for increasing the understanding of HIAP by health and other professionals, to build capacity to promote, implement and evaluate HIAP
