Beyond Boundaries: Prof Linda Van Ryneveld's COES Leadership

Posted on February 22, 2024

For the past five years, Prof Linda van Ryneveld has led efforts to advance fully online learning opportunities at the University of Pretoria (UP). As the Director of Comprehensive Online Education Services (COES), the office responsible for the UPOnline offering, Prof Van Ryneveld has led initiatives introducing fully online learning programmes and expanding access to education for working individuals and those interested in flexible learning opportunities.

"Back in January 2018, the Executive team handed me the keys to the COES kingdom as a special project, a bit like a test drive to see if this shiny new concept had wheels. It was a let's see if this can soar before we anchor it down scenario. Fast forward to 2023, and voilà, COES transformed from a pop-up experiment to a permanent fixture on the university landscape."

An academically and financially transformative journey

Bursting with pride at the achievements of COES over half a decade, Prof Van Ryneveld says the journey has been academically and financially transformative.

"We've launched three outstanding fully online programmes that have not only been a roaring success academically but have also bolstered our university's finances. Yet, the jewel in our crown is undoubtedly the COES team. Each member has woven their magic into the fabric of our UPOnline model, crafting a system where students have the flexibility to embark on their learning adventure during any of the six intakes each year."

Prof Van Ryneveld says what keeps her motivated in her role is the infectious energy of her COES colleagues. “Each member of our team, diligently steering the UPOnline programmes, shows a level of commitment and positivity that's downright infectious. It's genuinely uplifting to rock up to work daily, knowing you're in the company of fellow go-getters who share your work ethic."

The UPOnline model

Also serving as a constant motivation to success for this dynamite leader is the stellar success rates of the UPOnline programmes.

"It's heartening to hear how our UPOnline model has opened doors for many who otherwise might not have had the chance to pursue their studies. What's more, they've shared how this experience has fostered unprecedented closeness with both lecturers and peers alike, signalling to us that we're definitely onto something good."

Looking ahead, Prof van Ryneveld says her vision for COES is expansion and global recognition. She says the aim is to leverage UPOnline programmes to attract more international learners, positioning the university as a leading educational institution in Africa and enhancing global standing through innovative online offerings.

Living a fulfilled life

The COES leader says that finding personal growth and well-being through hobbies has become a priority outside of work. She says the world of audiobooks has been a revelation, allowing for the consumption of multiple books a month amidst a busy schedule. True crime documentaries further serve as a guilty pleasure, Prof van Ryneveld admits, adding excitement to everyday chores and commutes. Gardening has also emerged as a newfound passion, providing solace and fulfilment in nurturing new life.

As a parting message for UPOnline students and the public, she has the following to say: "Your determination defines your destination."
