Prof Tessa Marcus

Tessa Shein Marcus (PhD) is an Emeritus Professor, employed in the COPC Research Unit of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. She engages in research, public understanding of science and capacity development. Her current interests are patient/family centred practice and paediatric/cancer. A sociologist by training, she did seminal research on farm workers in commercial agriculture and land reform and was amongst the few to pioneer social scientific research in HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Her involvement in health related research and education expanded over the next two and a half decades when she joined the Department of Family Medicine (University of Pretoria) in 2008. Since then, she has been actively engaged with the development and application of Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) as an approach to transforming health in South Africa. In 2016, she was appointed Associate Professor in Family Medicine, one of only a few social scientists ever awarded an academic post in a Medical School in South Africa. She has published 49 peer reviewed journal articles, academic monographs and guides (see: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Tessa_Marcus/publications) In 2004 wrote 7 children's readers and 3 teachers guides in the Heinemann/Pearson Red Ribbon HIV/AIDS Readers Series, some of which are still available as part of the Maskew Miller "Reading Is Easy" series for schools in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique. Between 2015-2023 she authored, co-created and produced a number of educational and public health videos on pediatric cancer, Malaria and the UP COVID-19 Awareness Campaign Health is in our Hands (120 videos x 5 languages). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJjMCiaZBZEPSOtMNtX5PUQ/playlists.
