#Assupol TuksCricket: Tuks wins Red Bull Campus Cricket T20-tournament for the 3rd time

Posted on November 04, 2019

Assupol TuksCricket's celebration of 100 years of cricketing excellence got more special last night when they won the Red Bull Campus Cricket T20-tournament in Dubai.

The Tuks players were certainly fired as earlier the day they watched the Springboks beat England in the World Cup-final. They wanted to do the same as the "Boks". That was to bring the "Cup" home to South Africa.

They had the Pakistan's University of Karatsji on the backfoot from the very first over. Ruben Trumpelmann trapped Kashif Iqbal leg before wicket with his fourth delivery. Ruan de Swardt was even more devastating with the ball taking 5/12 in four overs limiting the Pakistan team to 100/10.

Credit must go to Karatsji's bowlers who took the fight to Assupol Tuks batsmen. After nine overs Tuks were with their backs against the wall. There score being 5/48.  Fortunately, Jandre Pretorius and Aron Visser kept their cool and steered the team to a victory.

Visser scored 36 runs from 21 balls and Pretorius 36 from 41 deliveries. It is the third time that Assupol Tuks managed to win the tournament. They were also victorious in 2014 and 2015.

The Assupol Tuks captain, Jiveshen Pillay, ended up being the best batsman during the tournament scoring 245 runs in five games. He was also rated as the most valuable player.

Pillay has the distinction of being the only batsman to score a century. During the semi-final encounter against Sri Lanka's International College of Business & Technology, he was at his absolute best scoring 109 runs from 64 deliveries. It included 10 fours and six sixes. In all five games, he hit 20 fours and 13 sixes.

De Swardt and Pretorius also counts amongst the top five best players of the tournament. De Swardt was the leading wicket taker with 10 wickets in five games while Pretorius scored the third-most runs. In five games he amassed 160 runs. Trumpelmann with nine wickets was the fourth-best bowler.

The best fielder was Donovan Ferreira who took eight catches. Francois van Heerden was the second most effective wicketkeeper making three stumpings.

On being asked how Assupol TuksCricket continues to dominate nearly every tournament, they play Kruger van Wyk (head coach) responded saying that the key to their success is planning.

"Talent identifying and player management are of utmost importance, especially since we are continually losing players to the provincial franchises. That is exciting, but it also means there is never resting on one's laurels.  At any given time, we try and have more than one good player in any position so as not to be caught off guard."

Van Wyk praised Pillay.

"He is a true warrior. Jiveshen had gone through a torrid time undergoing surgeries in both knees. Still, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he tends to get more motivated. He wants to make the most of every opportunity."
