Roux will be aiming for a medal at the World Student Games

There's a good reason why Wian Roux wants to hit the bull's eye when he is aiming with his bow at the target during next month's World Student Games in Germany.

If all goes according to plan, the Tuks student will have a BComm Marketing degree to his name. There's a chance he might continue studying next year, but it's slim because nature calls.

"The World Student Games are the only big competition I'm going to compete in this year because my primary focus is my studies. In 2021, when I competed in the World Student Games, I had a finger injury. It hampered the way I shot. So, as far as the Games are concerned, it is a case of unfinished business. I now have a second chance. I surely don't lack motivation. I believe I can win a medal."

Roux represented South Africa at the Paris Olympics last year. Things didn't work out the way he hoped they would. It was as if he had lost his mojo. Something had to change.

"I went to Jannie Putter for help. It is one of the best decisions I ever made. I've shot some of my best scores over the last six months because my technique and how I think about archery have improved. It's as if a switch has flipped in my head. Please don't ask me to explain what I mean because I'm not sure I can.

"It is like when you hit the bull with your first two arrows; there is a high expectation to do the same with the third arrow. That's when it becomes essential to stick with your technique. All that matters is staying focused and not changing a thing you are doing. In the past, I have made the mistake of shifting my focus from the target to what is happening around me. That which I can't control."

Roux plans to become a professional hunter after his studies.

"Ever since I was little, I have had a love for hunting and nature. Many people think hunting is just about shooting an animal, but to me, that's not what it's about. I have gone hunting a lot without shooting anything. It is just fun for me to be in the bush and try to outwit an animal in its natural habitat. It takes real skill.

"Last year after the Paris Games, I accompanied one of the international archery coaches and an archer who medalled on a hunting trip in South Africa.

"If I do become a professional hunter next year, it will mean that I will be away from home a lot. The problem is that the hunting season and the international archery season overlap. I will try 100% to qualify for the 2028 Olympics. But there are no guarantees. That's why I need to give it my all next year when I compete, as it might be the last time I do it."
