#TuksSport: Tuks athletes back Springboks to win World Cup

Posted on October 31, 2019

If the Springboks can keep their cool, they will beat England on Saturday in the World Cup final in Yokohama, but it is going to be a humdinger right up to the very last minute.

That anyway is the prediction of some of Tuks's top athletes who know what it takes to win at the highest level.

The South African rower John Smith who won gold at the Olympic Games and the World Championships predicts the Boks will win 20-17.

The "Golden Girl” of South African women's swimming Tatjana Schoenmaker, said having watched the Springboks beat Wales in the semifinal was nerve-wracking but also amazing.

"I got goosebumps all over after the Springboks had won. It made me proud to be a South African," said the Tuks swimmer.

Kaylene Corbett who has been a finalist at the World Swimming Championships and won three gold medals at the African Games, said what impressed her is that the Springboks showed what big match temperament is all about.

Rocco Meiring who coaches both Schoenmaker and Corbett at Tuks said Rassie Erasmus and his coaching team did an incredible job to turn Springbok rugby around establishing a winning culture.

"The fact that the Boks are playing final is unbelievable. Two years ago, not many fans would give them a chance of doing so."

The Springboks were criticized for the way they played against Wales in the semifinal. Utterly boring is how some fans described the game. According to Meiring is not how the Springboks win, but if they win that matters.

"As far I am concerned a win is a win. A few years from now, nobody will mind how the Boks played to secure a World Cup victory. Personally, I think Rassie might have a surprise installed for England,” said the Tuks coach.

The African judo champion, Michaela Whitebooi, has changed her training schedule so she can watch the World Cup-final. She has got one request for the Springboks.

"Please, please win. It would be fantastic for the whole of South Africa."

The Tuks Judoka admits being a Bok supporter is not easy.

"I get so emotionally involved with the Boks when they play that at times it feels I am on the field in the midst with them. Their pain is my pain."

The finalist at this year's World Rowing Championships Nicole van Wyk's advise to the Springboks is that they should remember that no game is over until it is over.

"Play your hearts out until the final buzzer. If the Springboks can play like they played in that last ten minutes against Wales, they will beat England. My score is 16-14 for the Boks."

The former youth and junior 400m-hurdles champion, Zeney van der Walt, has got a lot of confidence in "Coach Rassie" as she calls him.

"He is a man with a plan and knows how to go about achieving the goals he set for himself and the team."

Zokwakhana Zazini, also former world youth and junior 400m-hurdles champion, had the last word.

"Make us proud. Bring the World Cup to South Africa."
