Solid finish to Carlton Cup first round for UP-Tuks

Defending Carlton Cup champions, UP-Tuks finished the first round of the 2015 competition on a high with their emphatic 75-14 win against Oostelikes Eagles on Saturday.

UP-Tuks led 47-0 at the break.

UP-Tuks finished in second place on the log with 26, three points behind unbeaten Pretoria-Police. Police retained the Lucas Strachan Shield, the silver ware at stake in the first round.

“Two things are of note regarding our win against Oostelikes Eagles. The first is that we tainted their reputation as they went into the match with a 75% winning record (3 wins from 4 matches), but on Saturday never looked the part. It was their biggest defeat of the first round. The other aspect that had to be taken into account is that it was our second match in only five days since we also played TUT on Tuesday. That we got through the match against Oostelikes Eagles unscathed is because our players are fit, strong, mobile and hungry for success. We are a team on a mission,” commented UP-Tuks 1 Head Coach, Pote Human.

“Most encouraging of our solid performance is that we put them under pressure from the start and were very clinical in the execution of the game plan. There is of course room for improvement, but we can take a lot of positives from this win,” added Human.

Tuks-Fezelas registered and even bigger win against Oostelikes Eagles II (104-3). Tuks-Pumas beat Oostelikes Eagles III 66-3, whilst Tuks-Jongspan and Tuks u.20 both won by default (40-0) as their opponents withdrew on Friday.

All five Tuks teams are off to Rustenburg on June 6 where the will play Rustenburg-Impala in a friendly. Impala is the 2015 Community Cup runner-up.

UP-Tuks’ tries were scored by Gerrit Engelbrecht (3), Jan Enslin, Emile Temperman, Max Calitz, Riaan Britz, Dries Swanepoel, Marcel Steyn Scholtz, Lourens Pretorius and Schalk van Heerden. Jacques Rossouw succeeded with 10 conversions. Engelbrecht’s hat-trick saw to it that he finished the first round as the top try scorer (11).
