Olympus and Vividus Women defend their TuksChess status

Posted on April 21, 2015

On the 18th April 2015, TuksChess invited University of Pretoria residences and faculties to a thrilling TuksChess Res Tournament. Twelve teams showed up to the event of which eight were men’s teams (Olympus, Boekenhout, Sonop, NatHouse, EBIT, Olienhout, Vividus Men, Luminous) and five women’s teams (TuksBophelo, BCom , Vividus, Magrietjie and Curlitzia).  The men’s team were divided into groups A and B, were the best two teams of the group would go on to face each other in the semi–final and the winners would be determined thereafter.  Each team consisted of five players and the team that won the most games in each would get one point altogether.  Teams with equal points after a round would then only get one point.

The day started off rather slowly but excitement built on as the tournament proceeded. Vividus women were the winners of the women's section with an almost flawless win.  None of the women lost a game on the day, with two players only drawing in two games against BComwomen who were rather let down by their numbers. From the men’s group A, the two teams that progressed to the semi–final were Olympus and Boekenhout, these teams showed the most flair in the group stage beating the other teams by a great margin. The teams that went through to the semi–final from group B were Sonop and NatHouse.

Sonop seemed to have a promising team going into the semi–final against Boekenhout with Craig Bornheim taking the captain’s arm band, but they were however disappointed by the huge 4 – 1 defeat they incurred. On the other hand, Olympus continued with their fine form beating NatHouse to book themselves a rematch final against Boekenhout.

Nathouse was placed third after beating Sonop in the 3rd and 4th play–offs. Olympus and Boekenhout played a 2 ½ tie each in the finals. We had to the use a head–on–head encounter tie-breaker to determine the winners. Olympus won on the basis that the beat Boekenhout 4-1 in the group stages and that they also had more points in the group stages. It was good for TuksChess to see the Lajabu twin brothers of Boekenhout again, they are now in their final year of Engineering and we wish them the best of luck with their future endeavours. TuksChess would to thank all the players that participated in the event, you made the event successful and very enjoyable
