On Friday, 9 May 2025, the University of Pretoria’s (UP) Department of Taxation had the privilege of collaboratively hosting a LEGO® Serious Play® workshop in partnership with the University of South Africa and Tshwane University of Technology, held at the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus.
This dynamic and engaging session brought together a diverse group of stakeholders – including tax practitioners, the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners (SAIT), the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Office of the Tax Ombud, and academic representatives – to explore key challenges, co-create innovative solutions, and define the critical role of tax clinics in providing accessible, free tax education and support to unrepresented small businesses and individuals.
The South African tax clinics project collaboration team: Neo Molefi-Kau, Department of Taxation (DoT), College of Accouting Sciences (CAS), Unisa; Jerry Netshandama, Department of Accounting (DoA), Faculty of Economics and Finance, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT); Juanita Venter, Department of Taxation (DoT), Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences (EMS), University of Pretoria (UP); Dr Kerry de Hart, DoT, CAS, Unisa; Tanya Hill, DoT, EMS, UP; Prof Hanneke du Preez, Head: DoT, EMS, UP; Fezile Ncongwane, Head: DoA, Faculty of Economics and Finance, TUT; Adv Werner Uys, DoT, CAS, Unisa.
Using the LEGO® Serious Play® methodology, participants collaboratively envisioned what an ideal South African tax clinic should look like. From imagining bold possibilities to applying a realistic lens on current barriers and opportunities, the session marked the beginning of an exciting journey towards shaping a South African tax clinic framework.
The energy was palpable, and the workshop concluded on an inspiring note with a shared sense of purpose and enthusiasm for the road ahead.
The partner institutions look forward to continuing this collaborative journey and expanding the reach and impact of tax clinics in South Africa.
