Taxation students put theory to practice at the Mamelodi Business Clinic

Posted on December 14, 2018

The 2018 BCom Honours Taxation students recently had the opportunity to put theory into practice when they hosted a tax workshop for entrepreneurs at the Mamelodi Business Clinic. The students presented basic knowledge of the different types of taxes affecting entrepreneurs.

The Mamelodi Business Clinic is a programme of the Department of Business Management and the workshop provided an opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration among departments within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. The Clinic is aimed at facilitating entrepreneurship and small business development in and around the Tshwane community through entrepreneurship mentoring, entrepreneurship training, business advice and business counselling processes.

The Taxation students reported that the questions posed by the entrepreneurs were very specific, based on the type of business they run, which resulted in a practical and interactive session. Class representatives stated: “As we were aware that questions would be asked, it encouraged us to do thorough research and be well versed in our tax matters. We polished our communication skills to better interact with the Mamelodi entrepreneurs to a level that will be expected of us as tax professionals dealing with clients in the field. This level of exposure was an incredible learning experience and a great reflection of what we will face in the professional environment.”
