Posted on August 19, 2024

Karen Stark, a senior lecturer in the Department of Taxation, and Savannah-Lee Correia da Silva, who was an academic trainee in the department in 2023, collaborated with Australian academics, Sonali Walpola and John Minas on a paper for the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD) Academic Tax Conference.

The theme for the conference held during May 2024 in Amsterdam was “Blueprint for Individual Taxation Reform in a Globalized World” and the title of the paper they presented was “Certainty” in individual tax residence and the interpretation of tiebreaker rules in tax treaties. Many insightful comments were received from experts in the field of international tax such as Prof Pasquale Pistone, the academic chairman of IBFD, David G Duff from the University of British Columbia
and Philip Baker, a practising barrister and King’s Counsel in the United Kingdom.

Karen Stark expressed her sincere gratitude for the valuable networking opportunity and exposure to the thought-provoking discussions at the conference.
